Quotes from The way to love by Anthony de Mello
-"Your mind is creating unhappiness all the time"
-"An attachment is a state of clinging that comes from the false belief that something or someone is necessary for you happiness"
-"It is not possible for you to say that you are happy because the moment you become conscious of your happiness you cease to be happy"
-"A good deed is never so good as when you have no consciousness that it is good"
-"All you need to do is to open your eyes and see that you do not really the object of your attachment at all"

In Honor of Teachers. Charles M. Blow
Since it’s back-to-school season across the country, I wanted to celebrate a group that is often maligned: teachers. Like so many others, it was a teacher who changed the direction of my life, and to whom I’m forever indebted.
But how do we expect to entice the best and brightest to become teachers when we keep tearing the profession down? We take the people who so desperately want to make a difference that they enter a field where they know that they’ll be overworked and underpaid, and we scapegoat them as the cause of a societywide failure.
A March report by the McGraw-Hill Research Foundation and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that one of the differences between the United States and countries with high-performing school systems was: “The teaching profession in the U.S. does not have the same high status as it once did, nor does it compare with the status teachers enjoy in the world’s best-performing economies.”
The report highlights two examples of this diminished status:
• “According to a 2005 National Education Association report, nearly 50 percent of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years teaching; they cite poor working conditions and low pay as the chief reason.”
• “High school teachers in the U.S. work longer hours (approximately 50 hours, according to the N.E.A.), and yet the U.S. devotes a far lower proportion than the average O.E.C.D. country does to teacher salaries.”
Take Wisconsin, for instance, where a new law stripped teachers of collective bargaining rights and forced them to pay more for benefits. According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, “about twice as many public schoolteachers decided to hang it up in the first half of this year as in each of the past two full years.”
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t seek to reform our education system. We should, and we must. Nor am I saying that all teachers are great teachers. They aren’t. But let’s be honest: No profession is full of peak performers. At least this one is infused with nobility.
And we as parents, and as a society at large, must also acknowledge our shortcomings and the enormous hurdles that teachers must often clear to reach a child. Teachers may be the biggest in-school factor, but there are many out-of-school factors that weigh heavily on performance, like growing child poverty, hunger, homelessness, home and neighborhood instability, adult role-modeling and parental pressure and expectations.
The first teacher to clear those hurdles in my life was Mrs. Thomas.
From the first through third grades, I went to school in a neighboring town because it was the school where my mother got her first teaching job. I was not a great student. I was slipping in and out of depression from a tumultuous family life that included the recent divorce of my parents. I began to grow invisible. My teachers didn’t seem to see me nor I them. (To this day, I can’t remember any of their names.)
My work began to suffer so much that I was temporarily placed in the “slow” class. No one even talked to me about it. They just sent a note. I didn’t believe that I was slow, but I began to live down to their expectations.
When I entered the fourth grade, my mother got a teaching job in our hometown and I came back to my hometown school. I was placed in Mrs. Thomas’s class.
There I was, a little nothing of a boy, lost and slumped, flickering in and out of being.
She was a pint-sized firecracker of a woman, with short curly hair, big round glasses set wider than her face, and a thin slit of a mouth that she kept well-lined with red lipstick.
On the first day of class, she gave us a math quiz. Maybe it was the nervousness of being the “new kid,” but I quickly jotted down the answers and turned in the test — first.
“Whoa! That was quick. Blow, we’re going to call you Speedy Gonzales.” She said it with a broad approving smile, and the kind of eyes that warmed you on the inside.
She put her arm around me and pulled me close while she graded my paper with the other hand. I got a couple wrong, but most of them right.
I couldn’t remember a teacher ever smiling with approval, or putting their hand around me, or praising my performance in any way.
It was the first time that I felt a teacher cared about me, saw me or believed in me. It lit a fire in me. I never got a bad grade again. I figured that Mrs. Thomas would always be able to see me if I always shined. I always wanted to make her as proud of me as she seemed to be that day. And, she always was.
In high school, the district sent a man to test our I.Q.’s. Turns out that not only was I not slow, but mine and another boy’s I.Q. were high enough that they created a gifted-and-talented class just for the two of us with our own teacher who came to our school once a week. I went on to graduate as the valedictorian of my class.
And all of that was because of Mrs. Thomas, the firecracker of a teacher who first saw me and smiled with the smile that warmed me on the inside.
So to all of the Mrs. Thomases out there, all the teachers struggling to reach lost children like I was once, I just want to say thank you. You deserve our admiration, not our contempt

Empire Of The Sun - Half Mast
Come on now can we talk about it like we used to talk about
Hotel in the hills with a carousel
Farmhouse in the front a tractor in the lounge
Oh oh oh honey I need you round I know I know
Listen now can we talk in love and walk the town
Be easy now, go hiking through the hills in a summer gown
Raise the kids, peace within and make our sound
Hear me now, I'm down on knees and praying
Though my faith is weak
Without you so please baby please give us a chance
Make a mends and I will stand until the end
A million times a trillion more
Oh oh oh honey I need you round I know I know
Smile baby don't cry
I will only fly with you by my side
Baby I'm cornered now
Baby don't push me out
Lately I walk in doubt
Maybe it's crashing down
Baby can you save it now
Oh oh oh honey I need you round I know I know
Oh oh oh honey I need you round I know I know
Baby I'm cornered now
Baby don't push me out
Lately I walk in doubt
Maybe it's crashing down
Baby I'm cornered now
Baby don't push me out
Lately I walk in doubt
Maybe it's crashing down
Workaholism from Rework
Our culture celebrates the idea of the workaholic. We
hear about people burning the midnight oil. They pull
all- nighters and sleep at the office. It’s considered a
badge of honor to kill yourself over a project. No
amount of work is too much work.
Not only is this workaholism unnecessary, it’s stupid. Working more doesn’t mean you care more or get
more done. It just means you work more.
Workaholics wind up creating more problems than
they solve. First off, working like that just isn’t sustainable over time. When the burnout crash comes— and it
will— it’ll hit that much harder.
Workaholics miss the point, too. They try to fix
problems by throwing sheer hours at them. They try to
make up for intellectual laziness with brute force. This
results in inelegant solutions.
They even create crises. They don’t look for ways to
be more efficient because they actually like working
overtime. They enjoy feeling like heroes. They create
problems (often unwittingly) just so they can get off on
working more.
Workaholics make the people who don’t stay late
feel inadequate for “merely” working reasonable hours.
That leads to guilt and poor morale all around. Plus, it
Planning is guessing. From Rework.
Unless you’re a fortune- teller, long- term business planning is a fantasy. There are just too many factors that are
out of your hands: market conditions, competitors, customers, the economy, etc. Writing a plan makes you feel
in control of things you can’t actually control.
Why don’t we just call plans what they really are:
guesses. Start referring to your business plans as business
guesses, your financial plans as financial guesses, and
your strategic plans as strategic guesses. Now you can
stop worrying about them as much. They just aren’t
worth the stress.
When you turn guesses into plans, you enter a danger zone. Plans let the past drive the future. They put
blinders on you. “This is where we’re going because,
well, that’s where we said we were going.” And that’s the
problem: Plans are inconsistent with improvisation.
And you have to be able to improvise. You have to
be able to pick up opportunities that come along. Sometimes you need to say, “We’re going in a new direction
because that’s what makes sense today.”
The timing of long- range plans is screwed up too.
You have the most information when you’re doing
something, not before you’ve done it. Yet when do you
write a plan? Usually it’s before you’ve even begun.
That’s the worst time to make a big decision.

Stop coddling the super rich.
OUR leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.
While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as “carried interest,” thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they’d been long-term investors.
These and other blessings are showered upon us by legislators in Washington who feel compelled to protect us, much as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species. It’s nice to have friends in high places.
Last year my federal tax bill — the income tax I paid, as well as payroll taxes paid by me and on my behalf — was $6,938,744. That sounds like a lot of money. But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income — and that’s actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent.
If you make money with money, as some of my super-rich friends do, your percentage may be a bit lower than mine. But if you earn money from a job, your percentage will surely exceed mine — most likely by a lot.
To understand why, you need to examine the sources of government revenue. Last year about 80 percent of these revenues came from personal income taxes and payroll taxes. The mega-rich pay income taxes at a rate of 15 percent on most of their earnings but pay practically nothing in payroll taxes. It’s a different story for the middle class: typically, they fall into the 15 percent and 25 percent income tax brackets, and then are hit with heavy payroll taxes to boot.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, tax rates for the rich were far higher, and my percentage rate was in the middle of the pack. According to a theory I sometimes hear, I should have thrown a fit and refused to invest because of the elevated tax rates on capital gains and dividends.
I didn’t refuse, nor did others. I have worked with investors for 60 years and I have yet to see anyone — not even when capital gains rates were 39.9 percent in 1976-77 — shy away from a sensible investment because of the tax rate on the potential gain. People invest to make money, and potential taxes have never scared them off. And to those who argue that higher rates hurt job creation, I would note that a net of nearly 40 million jobs were added between 1980 and 2000. You know what’s happened since then: lower tax rates and far lower job creation.
Since 1992, the I.R.S. has compiled data from the returns of the 400 Americans reporting the largest income. In 1992, the top 400 had aggregate taxable income of $16.9 billion and paid federal taxes of 29.2 percent on that sum. In 2008, the aggregate income of the highest 400 had soared to $90.9 billion — a staggering $227.4 million on average — but the rate paid had fallen to 21.5 percent.
The taxes I refer to here include only federal income tax, but you can be sure that any payroll tax for the 400 was inconsequential compared to income. In fact, 88 of the 400 in 2008 reported no wages at all, though every one of them reported capital gains. Some of my brethren may shun work but they all like to invest. (I can relate to that.)
I know well many of the mega-rich and, by and large, they are very decent people. They love America and appreciate the opportunity this country has given them. Many have joined the Giving Pledge, promising to give most of their wealth to philanthropy. Most wouldn’t mind being told to pay more in taxes as well, particularly when so many of their fellow citizens are truly suffering.
Twelve members of Congress will soon take on the crucial job of rearranging our country’s finances. They’ve been instructed to devise a plan that reduces the 10-year deficit by at least $1.5 trillion. It’s vital, however, that they achieve far more than that. Americans are rapidly losing faith in the ability of Congress to deal with our country’s fiscal problems. Only action that is immediate, real and very substantial will prevent that doubt from morphing into hopelessness. That feeling can create its own reality.
Job one for the 12 is to pare down some future promises that even a rich America can’t fulfill. Big money must be saved here. The 12 should then turn to the issue of revenues. I would leave rates for 99.7 percent of taxpayers unchanged and continue the current 2-percentage-point reduction in the employee contribution to the payroll tax. This cut helps the poor and the middle class, who need every break they can get.
But for those making more than $1 million — there were 236,883 such households in 2009 — I would raise rates immediately on taxable income in excess of $1 million, including, of course, dividends and capital gains. And for those who make $10 million or more — there were 8,274 in 2009 — I would suggest an additional increase in rate.
My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.

The Washington Times Editorial: Obama’s downgraded America
The Obama administration has made history by presiding over the first-ever downgrade in the U.S. credit rating. President Obama has outdone all his predecessors in wrecking America’s good name. His answer to this problem: Spend even more.
Raising the debt ceiling was sold as a way of guaranteeing the U.S. credit rating. It had the opposite effect, which makes sense to anyone who understands credit. Take a family with a median household income around $50,000. If they spend $85,000 a year and have debt at $300,000 and growing, it’d be foolish to let them borrow more because they don’t have the income to pay it back. Raising the debt ceiling ignored this reality. Then, the Obama administration immediately demonstrated its utter lack of creditworthiness by blowing 60 percent of the initial $400 billion increase in one day, the largest single-day accumulation of debt in U.S. history.
The White House blames the George W. Bush administration for every economic woe, but the numbers speak for themselves. In 2008, the federal budget deficit was around 3 percent of gross domestic product. In 2011, it’s around 11 percent. Total federal debt was $10.7 trillion at the end of 2008 and is currently $14.3 trillion. Debt as a percentage of GDP was a painful 69 percent at the end of the Bush years, but Mr. Obama is pushing it over 100 percent, another disgraceful historic milestone. A record 45.8 million are on food stamps, and the percentage of working-aged Americans who have jobs is the lowest in three decades. According to Gallup’s daily tracking poll, in late January, 44 percent of Americans felt the economy was getting better, and 52 percent thought it was worsening. Now only 17 percent have a positive view; 77 percent understand our economy is nosediving.
The Standard & Poor’s ratings downgrade is only the beginning. Moody’s Investors Service still lists the United States as AAA but with a “watch negative” caveat, and S&P managing director John Chambers warned that should U.S. debt go over 100 percent of GDP, America would face a second downgrade. Speaker John A. Boehner should immediately call the House into emergency session to start passing serious budget cuts to stave off this looming credit disaster. If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid chooses to block these necessary measures, Democrats can shoulder the blame.
Mr. Obama is blithely passing the buck. At a Wednesday fundraiser, he refused to own up to his responsibility for the economic calamity America is facing, saying “because we were inheriting so many challenges, we’re not even halfway there yet. When I said, ‘change we can believe in,’ I didn’t say ‘change we can believe in tomorrow.’ ” If the nation continues on this disastrous course Mr. Obama has set, there will be no tomorrow.

Pema Chodron: SEEING OURSELVES CLEARLY
When we begin to see clearly what we do, how we get hooked and swept away by old habits, our usual tendency is to use that as a reason to get discouraged, a reason to feel really bad about ourselves. Instead, we could realize how remarkable it is that we actually have the capacity to see ourselves honestly, and that doing this takes courage. It is moving in the direction of seeing our life as a teacher rather than as a burden. This involves, fundamentally, learning to stay present, but learning to stay with a sense of humor, learning to stay with loving-kindness toward ourselves and with the outer situation, learning to take joy in the magic ingredient of honest self-reflection.

Pema Chodron. Cherish Ordinary moments
In our most ordinary days we have moments of happiness, moments of comfort and enjoyment, moments of seeing something that pleased us, something that touched us, moments of contacting the tenderness of our hearts. We can take joy in that. I find that it’s essential during the day to actually note when I feel happiness or when something positive happens, and to begin to cherish those moments as precious. Gradually we can begin to cherish the preciousness of our whole life just as it is, with its ups and downs, its failures and successes, its roughness and smoothness.

Pema Chodron. Natural warmth
The natural warmth that emerges when we experience pain includes all the heart qualities: love, compassion, gratitude, tenderness in any form. It also includes loneliness, sorrow, and the shakiness of fear. Before these vulnerable feelings harden, before the storylines kick in, these generally unwanted feelings are pregnant with kindness, with openness and caring. These feelings that we’ve become so accomplished at avoiding can soften us, can transform us. The openheartedness of natural warmth is sometimes pleasant, sometimes unplesant. The practice is to train in not automatically fleeing from uncomfortable tenderness when it arises.

Pema Chodron. The inbetween state
Life is a good teacher and a good friend. Things are always in transition, if we could only realize it. Nothing ever sums itself up in the way that we like to dream about. The off-center, in-between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we don’t get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit. It’s a very tender, nonaggressive, open-ended state of affairs.

Why are you so far away?
-Why are you so far? She asked.
-Why you never want to know that I am in love with you... that I am in love with you? The Cure. Just like Heaven.
Where to?
I never said that I would stay until the end... I never promised you chimeras, dreams... not even appetizing utopias...
Because since always,- and now I realize-, I was made of awareness, pain and holy sorrow.
Yes... all of that helps me look up and go on, running away from frequency, daring anyone brave enough to assault me with false promises, futile caresses, vane ideas to share lies...
No! This ending towards which you go is not mine! I never chose it! Rather, I prefer to continue my path, because next to you, sincerity would always hurt and we would misinterpret affection as Love... and I am afraid... I would not have any strength to put up with so much effort not to get asleep...
For that reason I am going away... from you and all the rest just like you... in search of others different from you and me, from your world and mine but able to appreciate how the last season is from the beginning of times...
Please, keep the decoration, the pictures... portraits of daily fake... keep your cravings for locking winds in beautiful bottles... your trodden carpets by vulgar soles...
Stay if that's your will... melt into mirages and ridicule melodies lacking of any truth... hollow like the hit against the emptiness... with no passion like that one who lowered his arms even before starting....
Stay then... if that's your wish. But don't expect me to do the same, because my track and yours, and the majority’s around, are as different as day and night, as appearance and Eternity...
Now I begin to know how the last breeze smells like... so happy... truly and completely... far... so far... at last...

Pema Chodron. This brief lifetime
How are we going to spend this brief lifetime? Are we going to strengthen our well-perfected ability to struggle against uncertainty, or are we going to train in letting go? Are we going to hold on stubbornly to “I’m like this and you’re like that”? Or are we going to move beyond that narrow mind? Could we start to train as a warrior, aspiring to reconnect with the natural flexibility of our being and to help others do the same? If we start to move in this direction, limitless possibilities will begin to open up.

US Heath insurance
What is a deductible and how does it work?
Typically, a deductible is the amount of money you must pay each year before your health insurance plan starts to pay for covered medical expenses. For example, with a $100,000 heart surgery bill, you would be responsible for paying the first $1,000. After this $1,000 deductible is met, the insurance company will pay a percentage of the bill in what is called the coinsurance.
What is coinsurance?
Coinsurance is a cost-sharing requirement where you are responsible for paying a certain percentage and the insurance company will pay the remaining percentage of the covered medical expenses after your deductible is met. For a health insurance plan with 20% coinsurance, once the deductible is met, the insurance company will pay 80% of the covered expenses while you pay the remaining 20% until your out-of-pocket limit is reached for the year. Typically, the out-of-pocket limit is the maximum amount you will pay out of your own pocket for covered medical expenses in a given year. For a plan with a $2,000 out-of-pocket limit, you will pay a $1,000 deductible and $1,000 coinsurance while the insurance company covers the remaining $98,000 of the heart surgery bill. Even if you are hospitalized again in the same year, the insurance company will pay 100% of your covered expenses within the limit of the lifetime maximum.
What are co-pays?
A co-payment or co-pay is a specific flat fee you pay for each medical service, such as $30 for an office visit, after which the insurance company often pays the remainder of the covered medical charges. Let's say you are not feeling well and went to see your doctor who charges $200 for the office visit. If your insurance plan has an office visit co-payment of $30, then you will only be responsible for the $30 and the insurance company will cover the remaining $170.
Do I have to meet my deductible before I see my doctor?
With some health insurance policies the answer is YES, but today, most health insurance plans do NOT require this. Most companies today offer plans wherein the deductible usually only applies while hospitalized or for more major procedures, such as CT scans or MRIs. Most plans today allow you to visit doctors and specialists, and fill prescriptions, with simply a co-pay.
What is "Out-of-Pocket-Maximum?"
This is the amount of money one would pay out of their own pocket towards their medical expenses in any given year. An out of pocket expense can refer to how much the co-payment, coinsurance, or deductible is. Also, when the term annual out-of-pocket maximum is used, that is referring to how much the insured would have to pay for the whole year out of their pocket, excluding premiums. Usually, your maximum out-of-pocket is never more than a couple of thousand dollars over and above your chosen deductible.
What is a network?
A network is a list of doctors, hospitals and other providers that have contracted, or agreed, with an insurance company to do business with the insurance company. The providers fees have been pre-negotiated, which means that the insurance company will not necessarily pay the doctor or hospital what your actual medical bills are, but will pay a lower amount. For example, when you have a gall bladder removed at a hospital, the hospital's charges, if you did not have health insurance, might be $10,000. But under the network pre-negotiated amount, the hospital may only receive $4,000 as payment in full. This saves you and the insurance company money. If you have a health insurance plan that utilizes a network and you use providers that are not part of the network, the amount of money that you would have to pay for those services will be considerably higher than if you had used providers that were in the network. Your insurance company will probably pay some part of those non-network bills, but you'll be paying a whole lot more. Always stay in your network if possible.
What's the difference between a Primary Care Physician (PCP) and a specialist?
A Primary Care Physician, or PCP, is the doctor you would go to on a regular basis, such as when you're simply not feeling well, or have an ear ache or the flu. A specialist is a doctor that your PCP might refer you to if the problem you have requires a doctor with more experience in a certain area. For example, if you contacted your PCP complaining about chest pains, your PCP would most probably refer you to a heart doctor (a cardiologist) who would have more advanced equipment and training to help you.
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is any health condition you have or have had prior to applying for a policy. For example, if you currently have had kidney stones at any time during your life, then kidney stones would be considered a pre-existing condition. Some insurance companies want to know about your pre-existing condition going back as far as your date of birth, but most insurance companies only look back ten years.
Will it prevent me from obtaining health insurance?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It will depend upon the condition you have or had, its severity, the cost of medications, and whether the insurance company thinks it will lose money by giving you a policy. Some pre-existing conditions will not exclude you from getting a policy; instead, the insurance company may issue a policy to you, but they might try to offer you the policy with a "rider" which is a clause in your policy that says the insurance company will cover you, but NOT give you coverage for your pre-existing condition. Some companies might offer you their policy with a rider that the company says you may ask them to remove after a certain length of time, such as two years, and other companies may make the rider permanent.
What are some common pre-existing conditions that prevent people from obtaining health insurance?
Alcoholism and drug abuse are usually two conditions that most insurance companies will turn you down for. Others include heart attack or other heart problems within the past five years or so, most companies will not take you if you are diabetic. Many companies will not accept you if you've had certain types of cancer EVER in your life, while other insurance companies won't care if the cancer was more than 20 years in the past. It's almost impossible to get health insurance if you are currently obese or pregnant. Having AIDS is always an automatic decline, as is a stroke in your recent past. Most companies won't care if you have controlled hypertension (high blood pressure) or controlled high cholesterol. But if you have BOTH at the same time, there are very few companies that will offer a policy to you.
What is a group/employer plan?
These types of plans are available to you through your place of employment if your employer offers this benefit. Most employers that offer their employees health insurance make you wait until 30 or 60 or 90 days after you've become employed before you can get on the plan. By state law (and some states may vary), benefits are a little different on group plans than they are on individual plans. For example, most individual plans do not include maternity benefits, but almost all group plans do. Mental health benefits are not usually covered very well on individual plans, but on most group plans, mental health benefits are treated like any other illness. Almost all group plans will cover your pre-existing conditions as soon as you become included on the plan, and with no waiting period. This means that if you have a heart condition and get a job that provides you with health insurance benefits, you could have a heart attack the day you become covered and those medical bills will be covered by the group insurance policy. By law, your employer is required to pay at least 50% of your monthly premium. Some employers may pay all of your premium, but they don't have to. Your employer is not required to pay any of your spouse or children's premium — most companies do not pay any of this amount, but some employers will.
Typically, a deductible is the amount of money you must pay each year before your health insurance plan starts to pay for covered medical expenses. For example, with a $100,000 heart surgery bill, you would be responsible for paying the first $1,000. Pregnancy Discrimination Act and Health Insurance
Pregnancy Discrimination Act and Health Insurance
The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 requires that any health insurance provided by an employer must cover expenses for pregnancy-related conditions on the same basis as costs for other medical conditions. An employer need not provide health insurance for expenses arising from abortion, except where the life of the mother is endangered.
Pregnancy-related expenses should be reimbursed exactly as those incurred for other medical conditions, whether payment is on a fixed basis or a percentage of reasonable-and-customary-charge basis.
The amounts payable by the insurance provider can be limited only to the same extent as amounts payable for other conditions. No additional, increased, or larger deductible can be imposed on any maternity health insurance coverage.
Employers must provide the same level of health benefits for spouses of male employees as they do for spouses of female employees.

Pema Chodron. An innocent misunderstanding
When the Buddha taught, he didn’t say that we were bad people or that there was some sin that we had committed—original or otherwise—that made us more ignorant than clear, more harsh than gentle, more closed than open. He taught that there is a kind of innocent misunderstanding that we all share, something that can be turned around, corrected, and seen through, as if we were in a dark room and someone showed us where the light switch was. It isn’t a sin that we are in a dark room. It’s just an innocent situation, but how fortunate that someone shows us where the light switch is. It brightens up our life considerably. We can start to read books, to see one another’s faces, to discover the colors of the walls, to enjoy the little animals that creep in and out of the room.

Diccionario perroflauta - español I
Indignados.

Pema Chodron. We just don't know
When we think that something is going to bring us pleasure, we don’t know what’s really going to happen. When we think something is going to give us misery, we don’t know. Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all. We try to do what we think is going to help. But we don’t know. We never know if we’re going to fall flat or sit up tall. When there’s a big disappointment, we don’t know if that’s the end of the story. It may be just the beginning of a great adventure. Life is like that. We don’t know anything. We call something bad; we call it good. But really we just don’t know.

Kindness In your eyes
I guess You heard me cry
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child
I'm blessed I know
Heaven sent And Heaven stole
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child
And what have I learned
From all this pain
I thought I'd never feel the same
About anyone
Or anything again
But now I know
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights
When you've been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight
Sadness In my eyes
No one guessed
Or no one tried
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child
Loveless and cold
With your last breath
You saved my soul
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child
And what have I learned
From all these tears
I've waited for you all those years
And just when it began
He took your love away
But I still say
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights
When you've been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight
So the words you could not say
I'll sing them for you
And the love we would have made
I'll make it for two
For every single memory
Has become a part of me
You will always be My love
Well I've been loved
So I know just what love is
And the lover that I kissed
Is always by my side
Oh the lover I still miss
Was Jesus to a child

Elvis Presley. A pocketful of Rainbows. Lyrics
I don't worry
Whenever skies are gray above
Got a pocketful of rainbows
Got a heart full of love
Mister Heartache
I've found a way to make him leave
Got a pocketful of rainbows
Got a star up in my sleeve
Kiss me extra tender
Hold me extra tight
'Cause I'm savin' your sweetness
For a lonely night, aye
Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye
No more teardrops
Now that I've found a love so true
I got a pocketful of rainbows
Got an armful of you
Kiss me extra tender
Hold me extra tight
'Cause I'm savin' your sweetness
For a lonely night, aye
Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye
No more heartaches
Now that I've found a love so true
Got a pocketful of rainbows
And an armful of you
Rainbows...
Rainbows...
Whenever skies are gray above
Got a pocketful of rainbows
Got a heart full of love
Mister Heartache
I've found a way to make him leave
Got a pocketful of rainbows
Got a star up in my sleeve
Kiss me extra tender
Hold me extra tight
'Cause I'm savin' your sweetness
For a lonely night, aye
Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye
No more teardrops
Now that I've found a love so true
I got a pocketful of rainbows
Got an armful of you
Kiss me extra tender
Hold me extra tight
'Cause I'm savin' your sweetness
For a lonely night, aye
Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye
No more heartaches
Now that I've found a love so true
Got a pocketful of rainbows
And an armful of you
Rainbows...
Rainbows...
The Smile's Conspiracy. From the book Apparitions. By Gabriel Puyo
Have you ever contemplated the passion of those musicians in complete ecstasy while playing?
How they live those moments to the fullest? Have you seen the wonderful bright in the eyes of
the person so deeply in love? Or the immense joy of the parents observing the baby sleeping?
What about the bliss of the sportsmen or women after winning an Olympics final?
These are just some examples where we can behold pieces of great happiness, when we feel
ourselves so complete, in perfect harmony with the entire world and the humankind.
And the question, the essential question here is: are those moments habitual or on the contrary,
are the exception, those rare events that happen once in a while? Or from another perspective:
should not we live every single moment of our lives or at least, most of them with that
contentment from our inner joy?
Because the truth of the matter is, using a lenitive, very heartbreaking. Looking around… where
is that joy? Where is the passion, the rapture, the crazy and marvelous happiness? Where in
matrimonies, in works, in relationships, in walkings, dancings, vacations… where? Where is it?
It is sad… but it is necessary to utter the word to break the curse. Maybe it is just that… and
what we need is to become aware… to rebel against what is the cause of this tremendous loss
along the way.
It is about time… it is the moment… now… to start the process to be… to help grow that
immaculate smile in your heart…
It is said that the most important thing that we learn when we win, is that we can win. You can
win. You can be happy, and find true love… and making your job not just a rough daily task but
your passion, the thing that you would do anyway and you get paid for it.
That’s the life we all are destined for. Since always…
We need to see beyond the looks. We have to get in communion with ourselves… peacefully and
honestly accepting the way we are…
Sometimes, I think this world is the real paradise. I am sure, it should be and no doubt, we could
make it that way. Because a world where people found true love, where everybody knows their
calling, where ignorance is never a bliss… that world has to be the paradise.
And we can start to build it right now… now as the real beginning of the eternity… just by
smiling… smiling in the hope of doing what we just love with our whole hearts…
A conspiracy… the smiles conspiracy… can you see my smile?

Pema Chodron. Consider Yourself lucky.
CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY
The next time you encounter fear, consider yourself lucky. This is where the courage comes in. Usually we think that brave people have no fear. The truth is that they are intimate with fear. When I was first married, my husband said I was one of the bravest people he knew. When I asked him why, he said because I was a complete coward but went ahead and did things anyhow.

Pema Chodron.
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH FEAR
No one ever tells us to stop running away from fear. We are very rarely told to move closer, to just be there, to become familiar with fear. I once asked the Zen master Kobun Chino Roshi how he related with fear, and he said, “I agree. I agree.” But the advice we usually get is to sweeten it up, smooth it over, take a pill, or distract ourselves, but by all means make it go away.

Pema Chodron. Lighten up.
Have you ever been caught in the heavy-duty scenario of feeling defeated and hurt, and then somehow, for no particular reason, you just drop it? It just goes, and you wonder why you made “much ado about nothing.” What was that all about?
I’d like to encourage us all to lighten up, to practice with a lot of gentleness. This compassion, this clarity, this openness are like something we have forgotten. Sitting here being gentle with ourselves, we’re rediscovering something. It’s like a mother reuniting with her child; having been lost to each other for a long, long time, they reunite. The way to reunite with bodhichitta (awakened heart) is to lighten up in your practice and in your life.

Grietas de ilusión. Fragmento.
Just like heaven.
¡No!

Dios no me sirve.
No lloro, no me lloro.
Me río

Pema Chodron.
WHEN YOU OPEN UP TO LIFE AS IT IS
When you open yourself to the continually changing, impermanent, dying nature of your own being and of reality, you increase your capacity to love and care about other people and your capacity to not be afraid. You're able to keep your eyes open, your heart open, and your mind open. And you notice when you get caught up in prejudice, bias, and aggression. You develop an enthusiasm for no longer watering those negative seeds, from now until the day you die. And you begin to think of your life as offering endless opportunities to start doing things differently.

Augustana - Counting Stars
Everything has a reason
Everything has a start
Anything that ever burned
Had a spark
Anything I ever wanted
Anyone I ever needed
Always seemed to leave me standing in the dark
Suddenly I’m caught in your light
Opened the door, and you stepped inside
And I’m watching the hours
Looking for reasons
Find that I’m missing every beat of your heart
‘Til you’re back in my arms,
I’ll be waiting up, counting the stars
Counting the stars
Nothing could ever touch us
Nothing gonna shake my faith
Nothing in this big, bad world will ever take you away
Like a rolling hurricane
Nothing’s standing in our way
Full of life, full of grace, in a perfect place
Suddenly I’m caught in your light
Opened the door, and you stepped inside
And I’m watching the hours
Looking for reasons
Find that I’m missing every beat of your heart
‘Til you’re back in my arms,
I’ll be waiting up, counting the stars
Ooh, counting the stars, ooh
Like a rolling hurricane
Nothing’s standing in our way
Full of life, full of grace, in a perfect place
Suddenly I’m caught in your light
Opened the door, and you stepped inside
And I’m watching the hours
Looking for reasons
Find that I’m missing every beat of your heart
‘Til you’re back in my arms,
I’ll be waiting up, counting the stars
Counting the stars
Counting the stars
I’ll be waiting ’til you’re back in my arms
And I’ll be waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting up
Counting the stars
Camino de Santiago
Pilgrims Credential for el Camino de Santiago
The only document that you need to do el Camino de Santiago is the pilgrims' credential or credencial del peregrino. You can get it for 1 euro in the main albergues (there is one in almost every important village in the Camino) which means that you can choose your starting point. To mention some albergues where you can get it I will say St-Jean Pied-de-Port, Roncesvalles or Pamplona at the beginning of el Camino de Santiago and after that you can also get them in Logrono, Burgos, Leon or Ponferrada and as I said nearly every big village in the Camino. You can also get it even before arriving in the Camino from many associations and fraternities of Amigos del Camino de Santiago - Friends of the Way of St. James that are spread for all around the world.
The function of the pilgrims credential or pilgrims passport is to record the places where you have passed and for that it will be stamped with the albergue's logo or stamp by the hospitalero in every albergue you sleep in. Besides, nearly every bar, hostel or associations along el Camino will have their own stamp for you to help yourself and stamp it in you credential. Some people really like this and stamp many stamps every day while others don't mind too much about it, however, don't forget to stamp at least one stamp a day (usually in the albergue where you sleep, don't worry too much about it because the hospitalero will ask it to you and he'll do it for you).
The reasons for doing this are two. Firstly, it is a proof that you are a real pilgrim and you are not cheating travelling by car (because you will have stamps on it from places where you can't access by car). Therefore, it will be your passport to sleep in the albergues. And secondly, once you have completed the Camino it is very nice to see your Credencial del Pelegrino with the stamps of every place you have slept in or eaten in. You will feel very proud of it.
You will also need the Pilgrims Credential if you want to get the Compostela in Santiago's cathedral. La Compostela is a diploma that the Catholic Church issues to honour the pilgrims who have walked the Camino. Your name will be printed in Latin. To get it you must have done at least the last 100km of the Camino on foot or by horse or the last 200km if you are cycling. You will get a different colour depending on whether you have done the pilgrimage with a Christian meaning - "devotionis affectu, voti vel pietatis causa" or for other reasons.
To finish this section, I have to remark that what I said regarding the albergues isn't as strict as it may seem. Why? Because, apart from your pilgrims' credential, it is very obvious who is a real pilgrim, who is walking and who is not. Your feet will say it. So don't worry if you stamp so many stamps that you finish your credential or if you happen to start the Camino in a very small village where they don't have new credentials. Just take a normal sheet of paper and make it your provisional pilgrims' credential. You can stamp on it the stamps until you get a new one. Again, don't worry, accommodation will never be denied to you because you have lost it or finished it. Everyone is very nice and helpful there.
I hope you have liked the photos... It's cool, isn't it? People are quite crazy about it although I tended to forget it always in my bag and didn't put many stamps.

The genuine heart of sadness
THE GENUINE HEART OF SADNESS: "Through the practice of sitting still and following your breath as it goes out and dissolves, you are connecting with your heart. By simply letting yourself be as you are, you develop sympathy toward yourself." (pg 42) "The sitting practice of meditation is the means to rediscover basic goodness, and beyond that, it is the means to awaken this genuine heart within yourself. When you sit upright but relaxed in the posture of meditation your heart is naked. When you awaken your heart in this way, you find, to your surprise, that your heart is empty. ... Your entire being is exposed - to yourself, first of all but to others as well. ... If you search for awakened heart, if you put your hand through your rib cage and feel for it, there is nothing there except for tenderness. You feel sore and soft, and if you open your eyes to the rest of the world, you feel tremendous sadness." (pg 45) "The genuine heart of sadness comes from feeling that your nonexistent heart is full. You would like to spill you heart's blood, give you heart to others. For the warrior, this experience of sad and tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. Conventionally, being fearless means that you are not afraid... Real fearlessness is the product of tenderness. It comes from letting the world tickle your heart, you raw and beautiful heart. You are willing to open up, without resistance or shyness, and face the world. You are willing to share your heart with others."
Dralas. Shambhala
DRALA: (Tibetan: "dra", enemy or opponent; "la", above): "beyond the enemy". "Unconditioned wisdom and power of the world that are beyond any dualism, therefore Drala is above any enemy or conflict. It is wisdom beyond aggression. It is the self existing wisdom and power of the cosmic mirror that are reflected both in us and in our world of perception." "One of the key points in discovering drala principle is realizing that your own wisdom as a human being is not separate from the power of things as they are... reflections of the unconditional wisdom of the cosmic mirror. ... When you can experience those two things together...then you have access to tremendous vision and power in the world...connected to your own vision, your own being. We actually perceive reality. Any perception can connect us to reality properly and fully." (pg 103)
"The dralas are elements of reality-water of water, fire of fire, earth of earth-anything that connects you with the elemental quality of reality, anything that reminds you or the depth of perception. Dralas [are] in the rocks...trees...mountains... a snowflake or a clod of dirt. What ever is there...those are the dralas of reality. when you make that connection...you are meeting the dralas on the spot. (pg 105) "The basic definition of Drala is 'energy beyond aggression'." (pg 108)
INVOKING DRALA: "If we are thoroughly trained in the disciplines of warriorship, then by invoking the drala principle, we can reawaken that intimate connection to reality." ... "When you invoke drala, you begin to experience basic goodness reflected everywhere-in yourself, in others, and in the entire world." ... you begin to view the universe as sacred world." (126) "You see that you can actually organize your life in such a way that you magnetize magic, or drala, to manifest brilliance and elegance in your world. The way to do this is divided into three parts, which are called the three ways to invoke drala." (pg 109)
External Drala: "Invoking magic in your physical environment; how you organize and care for your space is creating harmony in your environment in order to encourage awareness and attention to detail, promoting the discipline of warriorship." (pg 109)
Internal Drala: "Invoking drala in your body." "Basically, the experience of internal drala is that you feel oneness in your body-oneness in the sense that your head, your shoulders, your torso, your arms, your genitals your knees, your legs, and your toes hang together as one basically good human body. All of your sense perceptions work as one unit, as one basic goodness, one expression of basic health." (pg 111)
Secret Drala: "Secret Drala is the product of invoking the external and internal drala principles. Because you have synchronized sacred environment and your body so beautifully, you provoke tremendous wakefulness and nowness in your state of mind." Secret Drala is experiencing that very moment of your state of mind, which is the essence of nowness. You actually experience being able to connect yourself to the inconceivable vision and wisdom of the cosmic mirror on the spot. ...you realize that this experience of nowness can join together the vastness of primordial wisdom with both the wisdom of past traditions and the realities of contemporary life. ...you begin to see how the warrior's world of sacredness can be created altogether." (pg 113-115)
There are various levels of experiencing drala. The primordial or ultimate level of drala is experiencing directly the wisdom of cosmic mirror." "The inhabitants of the cosmic mirror." (pg 174) Ultimate Drala "the imperial rulers of Shambhala, who are called the Rigden Kings are the inhabitants of the cosmic mirror. They are the primordial manifestation of the wisdom of vast mind, the ultimate wisdom of drala. Therefore they are referred to as ultimate drala. Ultimate Drala has three characteristics [or qualities]."
[Three Qualities of Ultimate Drala]:
"First it is primordial,...going one step beyond before we ever think of anything at all."
"The second quality is unchangingness. There are no second thoughts...
The third quality of ultimate drala is bravery."
"...Once having made a connection to ultimate drala, it is possible for the primordial wisdom and vision of the Rigden Kings to be passed down to the level of human perception....the vastness of perception can be captured in simplicity, a single perception, on the spot. When we allow vastness to enter our perception, then it becomes drala; it becomes brilliant and luminous - magical. When we have this experience, then we are meeting what are called the inner dralas...empowered by the wisdom of the Cosmic Mirror, the Rigdens, to manifest brilliance and elegance in this phenomenal world. The inner dralas are divided in to the mother and father lineages."
[The Two Lineages of Inner Drala]
The "Mother lineage represents gentleness,
the Father lineage represents fearlessness... (pg 175) The third quality of inner drala is intelligence or discriminating awareness, which binds together gentleness and fearlessness. With discriminating awareness, gentleness is not ordinary gentleness, but it becomes the experience of sacred world. And fearlessness goes beyond bravado to manifest elegance and richness in a person's life. So the basic sharpness of awareness binds gentleness and fearlessness to create the warrior's world of vast but appreciative perception." (pg 176)
"The best and only way to invoke Drala is by creating an atmosphere of bravery." (pg 108) "By invoking the external and internal drala principles, you raise a wind of energy and delight in your life. You begin to feel natural power and upliftedness manifesting in your existence. Then, having raised your windhorse, you can accommodate whatever arises in your state of mind. There is no problem or hesitation of any kind. So the fruition of invoking secret drala is that having raised windhorse, you experience a state of mind that is free from subconscious gossip, free from hesitation and disbelief. You experience the very moment of your state of mind. It is fresh and youthful and virginal. That very moment is innocent and genuine. It does not contain doubt or disbelief at all. It is gullible, in the positive sense, and is completely fresh. Secret Drala is experiencing that very moment of your state of mind, which is the essence of nowness. You can actually experience being able to connect yourself to the inconceivable vision and wisdom of the cosmic mirror on the spot. At the same time, you realize that this experience of nowness can join together the vastness of primordial wisdom with both the wisdoms of past traditions and the realities of contemporary life. So in that way, you begin to see how the warrior's world of sacredness can be created altogether." (pg 114-115) "Bravery means you are not giving in even to any potential doubt; in fact, there is no room for any doubts whatsoever in this realm. (see Bravery)
"When you invoke drala, you begin to experience basic goodness reflected everywhere-in yourself, in others, and in the entire world." ... you begin to view the universe as sacred world."
